Symposium Agenda

It has been 17 years since the last World Conference on Large Lakes was held in the Great Lakes basin. The return of the conference to the region provides an opportunity to examine progress that has been made with regard to toxics, and to highlight resource management experiences regarding aquatic invasive species (AIS) and water quantity issues with global applications.

The symposium format will be a series of keynote speakers, individual presentations, panels and facilitated discussions. It includes a mix of researchers, managers and policymakers. There will be no symposium activities during 1:00-2:00 p.m., to accommodate those who wish to attend the IAGLR-ILEC Plenary Speaker session at 1:00 pm on June 24.

Funding for the symposium has been provided through the Office of the Great Lakes, Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality.

The Great Lakes Commission, chaired by Samuel W. Speck (Ohio), is a nonpartisan, binational compact agency created by state and U.S. federal law and dedicated to promoting a strong economy, healthy environment and high quality of life for the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence region and its residents. The Commission consists of state legislators, agency officials, and governors' appointees from its eight member states. Associate membership for Ontario and Québec was established through the signing of a "Declaration of Partnership." The Commission maintains a formal Observer program involving U.S. and Canadian federal agencies, tribal authorities, binational agencies and other regional interests. The Commission offices are located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
