Position available: Watershed Management Specialist

The Great Lakes Commission is seeking candidates for the position of Watershed Management Specialist. The position involves project management and support for watershed management, volunteer monitoring, and other collaborative resource management activities in the Great Lakes region. The ideal candidate will have outstanding communications skills; research and technical expertise; experience with collaborative resource management, policy development and stakeholder coordination; and a solid background in water quality programs and policies in the Great Lakes region.

The position is a full time, renewable 12-month appointment. The Great Lakes Commission offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefit package that includes (among others) medical, dental and optical insurance. The Commission also has an outstanding retirement program through TIAA-CREF.

Responsibilities
Position responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with federal, state, provincial and local agencies and organizations on a wide array of interjurisdictional projects related to water resource management and ecosystem protection and restoration.
  • Regional coordination of and support for local watershed groups throughout the Great lakes region on projects related to volunteer monitoring, watershed management, nonpoint source pollution/soil erosion prevention, and resource protection and restoration activities.
  • Specific duties include project development, management and support; meeting planning and facilitation; grant review and management; communications and website development; survey research and data analysis; technical report writing; and grant writing.

Potential topical areas include but are not limited to watershed management; volunteer monitoring; wetlands monitoring; ecological restoration; land use and nonpoint source pollution control; data use and exchange; organizational capacity building; and outreach and education for local resource protection groups.

This position is based in the Great Lakes Commission offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is affiliated with the Commission’s Environmental Quality Program Area. See the Commission’s web site at www.glc.org for more information about current projects.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have at least 2-3 years experience in the areas of watershed management, surface water and habitat monitoring, volunteer coordination, water resources, environmental protection or related fields.

Required qualifications include Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in fields related to water resources/environmental management policy or science.

Desired qualifications include experience with watershed management and monitoring; data/information management skills; proven written and oral communications skills; the ability to manage multiple projects; meeting design and facilitation skills; experience working with agency staff and stakeholders; demonstrated research and analytical skills; and grant writing/program development experience. GIS and web development skills and a familiarity with Great Lakes management programs and policies a plus.

The Great Lakes Commission, chaired by Lt. Gov. John Cherry (Mich.), is an interstate compact agency established under state and U.S. federal law and dedicated to promoting a strong economy, healthy environment and high quality of life for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region and its residents. The Commission consists of governors' appointees, state legislators, and agency officials from its eight member states. Associate membership for Ontario and Québec was established through the signing of a "Declaration of Partnership." The Commission maintains a formal Observer program involving U.S. and Canadian federal agencies, tribal authorities, binational agencies and other regional interests. The Commission offices are located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
