Welcome to the Eastern Great Lakes Region of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.
The Eastern Great Lakes Region (EGLR) of ASPRS is an active group of highly professional government, academic, private sector and interested parties from the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, the State of Ohio and northern Pennsylvania who are dedicated to advancing knowledge, skills and capabilities in applying mapping sciences and information management techniques within the region. The EGLR-ASPR works collaboratively with adjacent regions and Canadian colleagues to promote Society goals and objectives across the Great Lakes and Ohio River watersheds of the United States. The EGLR-ASPRS is home to many leading Sustaining Members of the Society, highly respected academic instituions with tremendous technological expertise and dedicated governmental organizations that rely upon photogrammetry and remote sensing. The EGLR-ASPRS also puts a significant premium on advancing our student chapters to promote long-term sustainability of the Society within the region.
- EGLR Schedules Fall Technical Meeting
The EGLR is planning on conducting its Fall Technical Meeting at California University of Pennsylvania in California, PA on Saturday, October 9, 2010. We hope to see many of you at this event.
- EGLR and WGLR Conduct Joint Meeting
The Eastern and Western Great Lakes Regions conducted a joint meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 18, 2010. The joint meeting was coordinated by Brian Huberty, President of the WGLR, with a lot of assistance from other capable members of the Western Region. The combined
meeting had more than 35 participants. Please visit: 2010 Combined WGLR-EGLR Meeting to access the list of attendees, the final agenda, copies of presentation materials and photos from the event.
- EGLR Member Dr. Carolyn Merry now National ASPRS President
All of us within the EGLR are proud that Dr. Carolyn Merry is the current President of the ASPRS. Dr. Merry is the Chair of the Civil, Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Sciences Department at The Ohio State University. She has been an ASPRS member since 1975 and has served the Society as Chair of the Publications Committee and an active member of several EGLR committees. Dr. Merry received her B.S. in Geology from Edinboro University, a M.A. in Geology from Dartmouth College, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland.
- NOAA Digital Coast Web Site Highlights Available Great Lakes LIDAR data
A comprehensive inventory of elevation data sets for the Great Lakes is now available from the NOAA Coastal Services Center. The Topographic and Bathymetric Data Inventory includes the "best-available" datasets collected over the last several years. The inventory can be accessed through an online, interactive viewer that displays the extent of data, helpful information about data set quality, and a link to download the datasets, along with a point of contact for further information. The inventory was funded under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, and can be used to identify existing data sets or strategically target areas for collection to fill data gaps. It includes publicly available data from states, counties, cities, regional governance, NOAA, USGS, USACE, and FEMA. Explore the site to find out what elevation data is available for your area. For more information, please contact Lindy Betzhold or Rebecca Mataosky.
- Great Lakes Flood Hazard Mapping Project Initiated
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has stated a new project to update its Great Lakes Coastal Methodology, including revising its Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for the Great Lakes coastline. The project is expected to enhance techniques for coastal hazard analysis and mapping and will engage state and local governments in defining mapping requirements. The multi-year project will assess the utility of existing bathymetric and topographic data, best available orthoimagery, and data on coastal structures and erosion rates. The project will identify data needs and include limited new data collection as necessary. For further information, please visit: www.starr-greatlakes.com or contact Ken Hinterlong of FEMA.
