Southeastern Michigan Contingency Planning Sub-area

_____________________________________

The Great Lakes Commission is involved in the Southeastern Michigan sub-area project, which is defined by a watershed boundary. It includes all, or a portion of, eight counties near Detroit: Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne.

This sub-area was selected because of the high population, number of potential spill sources and environmentally and economically sensitive resources in the area.

The Commission has assisted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), along with Resource Applications, Inc., in developing a draft Southeastern Michigan sub-area contingency plan. The plan is currently being reviewed by local emergency prepared ness committees, U.S. EPA and the United States Coast Guard. Draft maps of the area are expected to be produced by summer 1995.
