Applications are being accepted through January 31 for the 2011-12 Great Lakes Commission-Sea Grant Fellowship, a one-year position based at the GLC office in Ann Arbor. The Sea Grant Fellow works with members of the Great Lakes' science, policy and information/education communities to advance the environmental quality and sustainable economic development goals of the Great Lakes states. This will be the 12th year this fellowship has been sponsored by the Great Lakes Commission, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Sea Grant College Program and the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network.

Dates of the official fellowship are June 1, 2011, until May 31, 2012; however, these dates are flexible to accommodate academic semester or recipient needs. Eligible applicants include students in a graduate or professional degree program in law, public policy, public health, natural resources, aquatic sciences or other related field at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States. Ecological impacts of wind energy generation to be focus of March 2011 workshop
A workshop to further the understanding of wind development effects on the biota and ecosystems of the Great Lakes region, including birds, bats, fisheries, and both terrestrial and aquatic habitats, is planned for March 9-10 in Indianapolis. The event is being coordinated by the Great Lakes Commission for the Great Lakes Wind Collaborative, a multi-sector coalition of wind energy stakeholders working to facilitate the sustainable development of wind power in the binational Great Lakes region.

Titled “State of the Science on the Ecological Effects of Wind,” the workshop is designed to share information on research on ecological effects of wind, identify research needs, provide a networking opportunity for regional researchers and stakeholders, and develop regional project ideas and facilitate partnerships in pursuing research priorities.

The two-day workshop will be held at the Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. Sponsorships for the event are being solicited. More information is available at www.glc.org/energy/wind/sosworkshop/index.html. Contact: John Hummer, jhummer@glc.org.

Commission continuing atmospheric toxics webinar series
The Great Lakes Commission is midway through its Atmospheric Toxics Webinar Series showcasing the results of research activities conducted as part of the Great Lakes Air Deposition (GLAD) program, supported by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funding. To date, five webinars have been held and another five are scheduled, with the next on Feb. 3, 2011.

Since 2004 some 41 research grants have been awarded and managed by the Commission under the direction of a team of senior air pollution control staff representing each of the eight Great Lakes states.

As a result of this effort, a substantial amount of new scientific knowledge concerning atmospheric contaminant loadings, fate and transport within the Great Lakes basin, and the associated adverse effects on wildlife and human health, has been accumulated. The webinars allow GLAD award recipients to report their research findings, including follow-up measures and recommended policy actions. They are also aimed at promoting coordination and implementation of consistent regional policies and exploring future funding opportunities.

Further information on the GLAD webinars is available at www.glc.org/glad. Contact: Anna Soehl, asoehl@glc.org.
