Recap of Great Lakes Commission Semiannual Meeting in Washington, D.C., March 5-7

The Great Lakes Commission (GLC) and its partners attracted hundreds of Great Lakes policymakers to Capitol Hill earlier this month, despite a snowy weather forecast and the effects of sequestration beginning to impact U.S. federal budgets and agencies. Following its Semiannual Meeting and joint events with the Healing Our Waters® - Great Lakes Coalition, GLC members descended on Capitol Hill to impress upon lawmakers the importance of investments in infrastructure, ecosystem protection and restoration.

The GLC released its 2013 federal legislative priorities, which include:

  • Sustaining progress under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI)
  • Passing comprehensive legislation to strengthen Great Lakes conservation efforts
  • Strengthening protections against Asian carp and other aquatic invasive species
  • Addressing the crisis facing commercial navigation and recreational harbors in the Great Lakes
  • Helping communities upgrade aging water infrastructure
  • Reauthorizing the Farm Bill with strong conservation provisions
In addition to endorsing its legislative priorities, the GLC passed resolutions supporting phase II of the GLRI, cooperative and flexible nonpoint source conservation programs for the Great Lakes, and new comprehensive Great Lakes legislation to formally authorize the GLRI, the Great Lakes Legacy Act and related programs.

A full meeting recap, including presentations, factsheets and a slideshow, are available at www.glc.org/about/glcmeetings.html.

GLC Executive Director Tim Eder addresses the Commissioners on March 5.

Longtime Great Lakes advocate Sen. Carl Levin (MI) was joined by seven congressmen at the March 7 breakfast. Levin announced later that afternoon that he would be retiring and not seeking re-election to the Senate in 2014.

New mapper: “Great Lakes Restoration at Work”

The GLC has unveiled a new website “Great Lakes Restoration At Work” that maps close to 1,000 Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) projects that are underway in the region. The site, available at www.glc.org/restore/glrimap, includes additional map overlays of congressional districts, and state and county boundaries. This webpage showcases site-specific GLRI restoration projects funded in fiscal years 2010-2012, with an emphasis on on-the-ground actions.
