Whereas, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Waterway is a crucial asset for the economies of Canada and the United States; and
Whereas, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Waterway is a traditional eastern route for the national and international trade of millions of tonnes of Canadian prairie products each year; and
Whereas, the St. Lawrence Seaway prosperity rests for a good part on the traffic of cereals and minerals between Great Lakes and St. Lawrence ports, which is vitally important for the domestic fleet; and
Whereas, millions of dollars were poured by the federal government over the years to artificially maintain the private Port of Churchill, Manitoba, contributing to the deterioration of the competitiveness of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Waterway by diverting large quantities of cereals out of the system
Therefore, be it resolved, that the International Association of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Mayors urges the federal government to cease immediately any kind of federal support to the privately owned Port of Churchill.
