Past Events

IAGLR 2023

IAGLR hosted its 66th annual conference in Toronto in May 2023. After several years of virtual meetings, the conference was again held in person. The Great Lakes HABs Collaborative continued its tradition of hosting a session to bring together HABs researchers and managers in the region to present and discuss their work. The session was named “Updates on HABs Management and Research”. In total, 17 presenters shared their research findings, and the session was well attended, with standing room only for a majority of its all-day duration.

State of Lake Erie Conference

The State of Lake Erie Conference was held in March 16-18, 2022, in Cleveland, Ohio. Hosted by the International Association for Great Lakes Research, the conference featured two days of concurrent sessions, plenaries, and discussions. Click here to view the conference website.

Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting 2022

IAGLR held its annual Conference on Great Lakes Research in 2022 as part of the Joint Aquatic Sciences meeting (JASM), which brings together sister organizations of the Consortium of Aquatic Science Societies. Expected to attract 3,000 – 4,000 attendees, the JASM conference was held May 14- 20 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Click here to view the conference website.

Hosted by Ohio Sea Grant, the Understanding Algal Blooms: State of the Science Virtual Conference highlighted current scientific knowledge related to algal blooms. IAGLR 2021

Fellow researchers from around the world will gather online May 17-21, 2021, for IAGLR’s 64th annual Conference on Great Lakes Research. Hosted by Michigan Technological University, the virtual conference will feature four days of scientific sessions and speakers focusing on our theme Bridging: Knowledges • Seven Generations • Land to Lake. Understanding Algal Blooms: State of the Science Conference

The 5th annual Understanding Algal Blooms: State of the Science conference took place virtually in September 2020. The event highlighted current scientific knowledge related to algal blooms. 2019 State of the Strait conference

The 2019 State of the Strait conference took place on November 19th from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm at the University of Windsor. During this meeting, agency managers, researchers, students, and concerned citizens discussed the health of the St. Clair-Detroit River-Western Lake Erie region. 10th US Symposium on Harmful Algae

The 10th US Symposium on Harmful Algae occurred from November 3-8, 2019 in Orange Beach, Alabama. This is the only national conference focused exclusively on HABs. Visit ushabs.com to learn more.

 

Understanding Algal Blooms: State of the Science Conference

On September 12, 2019, Ohio Sea Grant hosted the 4th annual Understanding Algal Blooms: State of the Science conference which highlighted current scientific knowledge related to algal blooms. Research and outreach leaders presented findings from recent studies and identify important areas of uncertainty. IAGLR 2019

Fellow researchers from around the world gathered in Brockport, New York, on the shores of the Erie Canal for IAGLR’s 62nd annual Conference on Great Lakes Research. Hosted by The College at Brockport, State University of New York, the conference featured four days of scientific sessions and speakers focusing on our theme Large Lakes Research: Connecting People and Ideas.

 

Understanding Algal Blooms: State of the Science Conference

The 3rd annual Understanding Algal Blooms: State of the Science conference highlighted current scientific knowledge including: lessons learned from other systems, environmental and economic balance in agriculture, and moving towards solutions. Presenters were from regional agencies and institutions, with an expected audience largely from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Click here for more details.

IAGLR 2018

Fellow researchers from around the world gathered in Scarborough, on the green edge of Toronto, for IAGLR’s 61st annual Conference on Great Lakes Research. HABs Collaboratory In-person Meeting

The Great Lakes HABs Collaboratory hosted its second in-person meeting on Monday May 15th at NOAA-GLERL in Ann Arbor Michigan. During this meeting, participants were able to network with other HABs Collaboratory members, learn about progress the group has made, and help determine future goals for the collaboratory. HABs Collaboratory IAGLR Session

The HABs Collaboratory hosted a session on Great Lakes toxic blooms at the 2017 IAGLR conference titled “Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) from watershed influence to ecosystem effects”. During this session, 18 presentations highlighted current HABs research.

 

2016 Understanding Algal Blooms: State of the Science Conference

This conference will highlight current scientific knowledge about algal blooms, their causes, and best management practices to prevent them.

HABs State of the Science Webinar Series

The HABs State of the Science webinar series is brought to you by the Great Lakes HABs Collaboratory, in collaboration with Ohio Sea Grant and LimnoTech, to share on the latest research related to Harmful Algal Blooms in the Great Lakes.

The HABs State of the Science Webinar Series consist of at least 8 one-hour webinars throughout the summer, each with different topics related to HABs. These webinars will have a speed-talk format: six to eight researchers, 5 minutes each, followed by a group discussion with all attendees.

December 2015, Kick-off meeting

More than 60 people gathered at NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory on December 15, 2015 to share research, ideas, and information needs related to HABs in the Great Lakes. Five key themes emerged from that meeting as deserving more focused attention:  Toxicity;  N-Cycling; Mythbusters; Common Conceptual Model; and Communications.
