The ship was originally used to launch and retrieve test torpedoes and targets before being decommissioned from the U.S. Navy in 1995. It was then transferred to the Naval Sea Cadet Corps and was renamed the United States Naval Sea Cadet Ship Grayfox in 1998 when it came to Port Huron.
