SUMMARY:Great Lakes Seminar Series: Jason Keeler
DESCRIPTION:The Maritime to Inland Transitions Towards ENvironments for Convection Initiation (MITTEN-CI) Field Campaign \nThe evolution of the marine atmospheric boundary layer as it advects inland during the warm season plays a critical role in the initiation–or suppression–of convection in the Great Lakes coastal environment. Gaining a deeper understanding of these transitions and their effects on convection is of significant importance\, particularly given the large population in many coastal areas. To address this\, the National Science Foundation-funded Maritime to Inland Transitions Towards ENvironments for Convection Initiation (MITTEN-CI) campaign was conducted in July 2024\, with the goal of developing an extensive dataset that could effectively characterize these transitions. SUMMARY:Ladies of the Lights: Community Lecture
DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Wednesday\, March 19th at 6pm\, doors open at 5:30pm\nWHERE: Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center\, 500 W. Fletcher Street\, Alpena\, MI\nWHO: Presented by Dianna Stampfler\nHOW: No RSVP or payment required \nFor nearly 30 years\, Dianna Stampfler – an author\, freelance writer\, and armchair historian – has been researching lighthouses around her home state of Michigan. \nDuring that time\, she’s been drawn to the stories of the dozens of women who served as keepers of these majestic beacons. As government employees\, these women worked alongside men and were well respected within the industry. While keeping the lights burning\, many also were wives and mothers\, leaving a bright legacy in their wake. \nEvent website: https://thunderbayfriends.org/index.php/event/lecture-ladies-of-the-lights/

SUMMARY:Great Lakes Seminar Series: David Lodge
DESCRIPTION:Title: The promises and perils of research in solving sustainability problems\nLocation: Ann Arbor\, MI\, or online \nResearchers often assume that the value of research in solving problems is self-evident. Yet most research does not lead to solutions\, even when the proposals that launched the research promised solutions. University and government researchers could address this longtime peril by including clear theories of change in project development\, and co-creating and co-executing projects across disciplines and sectors. This would require alignment of funding and infrastructure to support such mission-driven research. In a rapidly changing government landscape\, I will examine past examples of the role of research and technology development in driving change in policies\, practices\, and products. While I do not promise to resolve all the promises and perils\, I will suggest some possible ways forward for solutions-oriented sustainability research in government and universities. \nEvent website: https://ciglr.seas.umich.edu/event/032025-david-lodge/\nContact: Margaret Throckmorton\, University of Michigan\, Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research\nEmail: throckmj@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Development of Natural and Nature-based Features Decision Support Tools for Great Lakes Shorelines in Michigan and New York
DESCRIPTION:The Interagency Ecological Restoration Quality Committee March webinar presentation will be “Development of Natural and Nature-based Features (NNBF) Decision Support Tools for Great Lakes Shorelines in Michigan and New York” by Brian Majka of GEI. \nThe use of natural and nature-based features (NNBF) for erosion control and flood management along coastal shorelines is growing nationwide. However\, as an emerging practice\, there are limited tools available to guide landowners and practitioners in the selection of NNBF techniques. The States of Michigan and New York\, in parallel efforts\, are currently developing decision support tools (DST’s) to better inform the selection of NNBF practices with the intent to increase resiliency in coastal communities. The DSTs are semi-quantitative\, combining engineering practices with ecological considerations in tools that will be functional and easy to use for both non-professional landowners and professional designers and practitioners. This presentation will review NNBF practices on Great Lakes Shorelines and will review the tools\, which are currently under development. The presenter is Brian Majka\, a Senior Restoration Ecologist who has led design and construction of many ecological restoration projects throughout the Great Lakes region. \nEvent website: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/2992620404365327452\nContact: Tim Lewis\, IERQC Co-Chair\, GDIT\nEmail: Timothy.Lewis2@gdit.com
