SUMMARY:Freshwater Science: Evaluating Interventions for Harmful Algal Blooms in Grand Lake St. Mary’s
DESCRIPTION:Alum application is sometimes used to treat or prevent harmful algal blooms in inland lakes such as Ohio’s Grand Lake St. Mary’s\, which experiences severe harmful algal blooms similar to Lake Erie’s western basin. But a 2021 Wright State University study suggests that the benefits\, if any\, of alum application and other interventions are short-lived. \nDr. Mark McCarthy\, who led the project\, suggests that climate change and external nitrogen inputs play a larger role in the persistence and severity of algal blooms in these lakes. \nThe webinar is free\, but registration is required to receive log-in information. \nEvent website: https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar/2023/01/25/v01av/freshwater-science\nContact: Jill Jentes\, jentes.1@osu.edu

SUMMARY:Continuing Archaeological Research on the Alpena-Amberly Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Check out the latest in the Sanctuary Lecture Series! \nThe discovery of ancient caribou hunting structures preserved beneath Lake Huron has transformed our understanding of the early human occupation of the Great Lakes. Since the initial discovery of the Alpena-Amberly Ridge\, research has focused on broadening our understanding of these early hunters and the environment in which they lived. Join Dr. John O’Shea\, the Curator of Great Lakes Archaeology at the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology and Professor in the Department of Anthropology\, as he provides an update on the exciting results of these new multi-disciplinary research efforts. \nEvent website: https://thunderbay.noaa.gov/\nContact: Stephanie Gandulla\, Resource Protection Coordinator\, NOAA Thunder Bay NMS\nEmail: Steph.Gandulla@noaa.gov \nPhone: (989) 312-3579

SUMMARY:Freshwater Science: Turning Dredged Sediments into Farm Soil Nutrient Supplements
DESCRIPTION:Dredging is essential to keeping Lake Erie harbors open and working\, but disposal of the dredged sediment can be problematic. Between the nutrients and other pollutants the sediment can carry\, and the murky water disposal can cause\, open-lake disposal of dredged sediments is prohibited in Ohio as part of an effort to prevent harmful algal blooms. \nDr. Angelica Vazquez Ortega at Bowling Green State University is examining whether integrating dredged sediments from Ohio harbors into farm soil could improve corn crop yields and overall soil health while also keeping those sediments out of land-based containment areas. \nThe webinar is free\, but registration is required to receive log-in information. \nEvent website: https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar/2023/02/27/twnqt/freshwater-science\nContact: Jill Jentes\, jentes.1@osu.edu

SUMMARY:2023 ANR Seminar Sustainable Intensification of the Rural Landscape: Protecting Soil Health\, Water Quality\, and Farm Profitability
DESCRIPTION:Rural landscapes are complex physical and biological systems integrating crop and forested land\, crop rotations and riparian zones\, nutrient cycling\, a balance of pests and pathogens\, and other interactions. Many producers seek to redesign their cropping systems guided by agroecological principles whereby soil health and ecological services accumulate in mutually supportive ways. They are actively involved in devising\, testing\, and evaluating new and innovative practices on their farms to enhance biodiversity and beneficial interactions\, and improve resilience and risk mitigation. Attendees at the 2023 Michigan Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society March 10 conference will discover practical and sustainable ways to manage the rural landscape. \nEvent website: https://www.miglswcs.org/events-and-archives/\nContact: Tim Harrigan\, Associate Professor and Extension Specialist\, Michigan State University\nEmail: harriga1@msu.edu \nPhone: (517) 353-0767

SUMMARY:The Case for a Statewide Septic Code: Michigan Must Inspect Septic Systems to Protect Fresh Water
DESCRIPTION:The online session will offer legal\, scientific\, economic\, and political perspectives on the urgent need and critical opportunity for Michigan to finally join the rest of the nation in adopting a law to protect public health and fresh water from septic pollution. \nBillions of gallons of poorly or untreated sewage flow each year into an estimated 330\,000 failed septic systems. An unknown amount of that raw sewage ends up in lakes\, streams\, and groundwater\, the source of drinking water for 45% of Michigan’s population. \nFLOW Executive Director Liz Kirkwood will host the webinar\, and Legal Advisor Skip Pruss will moderate the panel discussion with: \n\nState Rep. Phil Skaggs\nDr. Joan Rose of Michigan State University\nBrad Ward\, Legal and Policy Director of the Michigan Realtors\n\nThe online event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Freshwater Science: Understanding and (Potentially) Mitigating the Impacts of Tile Drainage
DESCRIPTION:Recent research from across the Midwest shows that with drainage water management\, which uses tile drainage to control and adjust water flow from fields\, annual nitrogen loads in field runoff can be reduced by as much as 50% while increasing crop yields. A similar result might be possible for phosphorus\, with can fuel harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie. \nDr Steve Lyon at The Ohio State University is examining how this tile drainage impacts other water flow in agricultural fields\, to better understand overall runoff and nutrient flows. \nThe webinar is free\, but registration is required to receive log-in information. \nEvent website: https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar/2023/03/22/4nocf/freshwater-science\nContact: Jill Jentes\, jentes.1@osu.eud

SUMMARY:Freshwater Science: Lake Erie Charter Captains Business Survey
DESCRIPTION:Ohio’s Lake Erie coast offers great access for recreational anglers\, including a robust and economically important charter fishing industry. However\, environmental conditions\, economic climate and individual angler behaviors may all change over time. These changes could also impact the charter fishing industry. \nIn early 2021\, Ohio Sea Grant Extension Program Manager Tory Gabriel led a survey of licensed fishing guides gauge the attitudes\, characteristics and economic impacts of the industry for the 2020 season and document any changes from previous surveys. This information can be useful to captains\, resource managers\, local communities and decision makers assessing the health and needs of the industry. \nThe webinar is free\, but registration is required to receive log-in information. \nEvent website: https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar/2023/04/26/v1lgy/freshwater-science\nContact: Jill Jentes Banicki\, jentes.1@osu.edu
