SUMMARY:Sanctuary Lecture Series: Birds of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Join local high school teacher\, Andrew Wolfgang\, at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center as he shares many opportunities to find unique birds in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. He will describe how understanding the ecology and behavior of certain species is key to their conservation. Along with weather patterns and geography\, he will talk about predicting the best times and places to see certain wildlife in the sanctuary. Andrew will share information on over 300 species and 20+ families of birds that are likely to show up along the shoreline or flying above Lake Huron. He will also briefly discuss some of the most controversial ecological issues surrounding colonial waterbirds nesting on northern Lake Huron’s islands. \nThe lecture begins at 7:00pm. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the 47th Larval Fish Conference (LFC47)\, with is being organized by the Early Life History Section of the American Fisheries Society (AFS). Scientific sessions will occur during Monday-Thursday\, May 13-16\, 2024\, at Sawmill Creek Resort\, located in Huron\, Ohio\, on the southern shore of Lake Erie. Eight themes have been proposed for this year’s conference. \nIn addition to scientific sessions\, the 47th LFC will have multiple off-site excursions from which to choose (e.g.\, charter fishing\, kayaking/canoeing\, birding/hatchery tour\, science cruise/Stone Laboratory tour)\, an early career event (focused on preventing scientific burnout)\, a banquet with free dinner\, and a larval fish identification workshop on Friday\, May 17. SUMMARY:Great Lakes Seminar Series: Ed Verhamme
DESCRIPTION:Applying New Technology at a Great (Lake) Scale: What are We Waiting for? \nDespite the ubiquity of modern electronics in our pockets\, cars\, and buildings\, there’s still relatively few sensors deployed in the natural environment\, including the watersheds\, nearshore areas and open waters of the Great Lakes. Why is that? This seminar will examine a few case studies where the number of sensors has scaled quickly and where progress has stalled. Technological advancements have helped to increase sensor reliability and lower costs (both capital and operation)\, but catastrophic events are still the main catalyzing force driving rapid change in the region. Examples include the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald\, large hurricanes\, and more recently the Toledo Water Crisis. SUMMARY:Great Lakes Seminar Series with Jeffrey Freymueller\, Geodetic Observations of Water Mass Changes in the Great Lakes Basin
DESCRIPTION:Changes in total water mass now can be measured by ground-based and space-based observations. As water moved around the planet\, the entire Earth deforms as a result of the changing force exerted by the weight of the water\, and we can measure these motions using precise GPS observations. The gravity changes due to the changing distribution of water can also be measured using data from the GRACE satellite mission. Because these observations provide estimates of the total water mass changes\, we can combine them with measurements of surface water changes to infer changes in groundwater\, which are otherwise hard to measure. Previous work showed that the 2012-2019 rise of Great Lakes water levels produced up to about 2 cm of ground subsidence\, which we can observe in GPS data.
