SUMMARY:Great Lakes Seminar Series: Silvia Newell
DESCRIPTION:Wetlands perform critical ecosystem services\, including nutrient reduction\, flood mitigation\, and biodiversity habitat. More than 90% of wetlands in Ohio have been destroyed and most major water bodies in the state now experience annual harmful cyanobacterial blooms. \nThe H2Ohio Initiative in part funds statewide wetland restoration to improve water quality through nutrient reduction. Dr. Newell is one of the H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring Program leads\, monitoring water quality at newly constructed wetland or restored wetlands. This talk will focus on nutrient reductions at two wetlands: Brooks Park flowing into Buckeye Lake\, a hypereutrophic lake experiencing annual harmful algal blooms. SUMMARY:Rouge Winter Stonefly Search
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to help search for winter stoneflies (sensitive insects that hatch from streams in winter) as part of a long term monitoring program. No experience is necessary\, just an interest in learning and willingness to be outdoors for several hours in the winter. Children 8 and older are welcome with a participating adult. Volunteers meet at a central location for an intro and refreshments\, are assigned to a team of 4-8 people and travel to two sites to sample under the direction of a trained team leader. Only the team leader enters the water; volunteer pick through samples onshore. This is a fun and exciting way to get to know the Rouge River. \nEvent website: https://therouge.org/bug-hunt-events-and-trainings/\nContact: Lauren Eaton\, Monitoring Manager\, Friends of the Rouge\nEmail: leaton@therouge.org\nPhone: (734) 927-4904

SUMMARY:Great Lakes Seminar Series: Claire Pettersen
DESCRIPTION:Winter precipitation (rain and snowfall) has widespread impacts on communities through regional ecology\, hydrological planning\, and socioeconomic effects. In this presentation\, I will feature important findings from winter weather regime-based studies leveraging precipitation observations from a long-term\, ground-based instrument suite in the Northern Great Lakes region. Realistic estimates of rain and snowfall in weather forecasting and climate models are challenging due to uncertainties in cloud and precipitation parameterization schemes. Additionally\, remote-sensing observations require assumptions about hydrometeor microphysical and radiative properties. High temporal resolution\, multi-instrument observations of clouds and precipitation can help better constrain processes in models and refine retrieval assumptions\, leading to more accurate quantification of accumulation. SUMMARY:Call Before You Haul 2.0 - Reducing the Transport of Aquatic Invasive Species via Trailered Watercraft from the Great Lakes Region
DESCRIPTION:Trailered watercraft is considered a key pathway for the spread and introduction of aquatic invasive species (AIS) to inland waters throughout North America. \nThe Call Before You Haul 1.0 program was initiated in late 2022 by Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species via trailered watercraft. There remains a significant number of infested watercraft coming from the Great Lakes regions of the United States and Canada to western states. Call Before You Haul 2.0 is an effort to work collaboratively with Great Lakes region entities to reduce interstate transport of aquatic invasive species – for the benefit of all states and provinces. \nJoin us on February 22\, 2024 at 10am Pacific Time as we launch Call Before You Haul 2.0. Make a difference as we work collaboratively to protect North American waterbodies from aquatic invasive species. \nEvent website: https://www.westernais.org/callbeforeyouhaul\nContact: Lisa DeBruyckere\, Consultant on contract with Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission\nEmail: lisad@createstrat.com \nPhone: (503) 704-2884

SUMMARY:Rouge Frog and Toad Survey
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to survey Rouge wetlands by listening for calling frogs and toads. Interested volunteers must attend a 2 hour training on March 2\, learn eight calls\, and survey an assigned survey block. Surveys are done independently on warm spring and summer nights several times a month\, March through July. Children are welcome to participate when accompanied by a participating adult. \nAmphibians are sensitive to changes in the environment as they rely on good quality wetlands and uplands. Their presence or absence is an indicator of the health of the watershed. Participants in this survey will learn about wetlands\, the eight local species of frogs and toads\, what their calls sound like and contribute to a long term study. \nInterested volunteers must pre-register for the workshop: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfou6wb0GFKbZGSwdM4lGmoYQG7Owf1UyD7W-fr-VYpvYNpLQ/viewform?usp=sf_link \nEvent website: https://therouge.org/frog-toad-survey-training-workshops/\nContact: Sally Petrella\, Watershed Ecologist\, Friends of the Rouge\nEmail: spetrella@therouge.org \nPhone: (734) 927-4904

SUMMARY:Great Lakes Seminar Series: Jeff Freymueller
DESCRIPTION:Changes in total water mass now can be measured by ground-based and space-based observations. As water moved around the planet\, the entire Earth deforms as a result of the changing force exerted by the weight of the water\, and we can measure these motions using precise GPS observations. The gravity changes due to the changing distribution of water can also be measured using data from the GRACE satellite mission. Because these observations provide estimates of the total water mass changes\, we can combine them with measurements of surface water changes to infer changes in groundwater\, which are otherwise hard to measure. \nEvent website: https://ciglr.seas.umich.edu/event/030724-jeffrey-freymueller/\nContact: Margaret Throckmorton\, University of Michigan CIGLR\nEmail: throckmj@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Michigan Chapter of the Soil & Water Conservation Society ANR Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Intensification of the Rural Landscape: Protecting Soil Health\, Water Quality and Farm Profitability \nRural landscapes are complex environmental systems integrating crop\, pasture\, forest and other land uses\, including riparian zones; all supported by soil and its complex physical\, chemical and biological components. Soil management includes: crop rotations\, nutrient cycling\, balancing pests and pathogens\, and other interactions. Many producers seek to redesign their cropping systems guided by agroecological principles whereby soil health and ecological services accumulate in mutually supportive ways. They are actively involved in devising\, testing\, and evaluating new and innovative practices on their farms to enhance biodiversity and beneficial interactions while improving resilience and mitigating risk. Attendees at this March 8\, 2024\, ANR Seminar will discover practical and sustainable ways to manage rural landscapes. \nEvent website: https://www.miglswcs.org/events-and-archives/\nContact: Gerald Miller\, Chair\, Professional Development Committee\, Michigan Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society\nEmail: soil@iastate.edu\nPhone: (515) 291-3442
