SUMMARY:Estimating Long-term Phosphorus Retention Capacity of Ohio Riverine and Coastal Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:Just how much phosphorus can a wetland absorb and retain over the long run? That’s the question that researchers have spent the past two years investigating as part of an effort to reduce the phosphorus loading that is fueling algal blooms in Lake Erie. A research team from Old Woman Creek Reserve and the University of Toledo developed a Bayesian hierarchical modeling approach to calculate the phosphorus retention capacity of wetlands with limited datasets. \nIn this webinar\, the team will share some of their key findings\, management implications\, and potential for other practitioners to use their monitoring guide and statistical codes to calculate the nutrient retention capacity of their wetlands. In addition to taking audience questions\, the team will offer some ideas about how their work informs an ambitious new water quality initiative in Ohio. \nEvent website: http://www.nerrssciencecollaborative.org/event/erie-phosphorus-retention\nContact: Nick Soberal\, Technical Writer\, National Estuarine Research Reserve System Science Collaborative\nEmail: nsoberal@umich.edu\nPhone: (734) 763-0034

SUMMARY:Great Lakes and Space Research
DESCRIPTION:“Inner Space to Outer Space: Great Lakes’ Contribution to Space Exploration & Research” will be presented by  State of Michigan Maritime Archaeologist Wayne Lusardi.  Mr. Lusardi will highlight an assortment of objects\, both human-made and natural\, that have fallen from space into the Great Lakes. \nThe Great Lakes have served as a training ground throughout the history of aviation. Nineteenth-century balloon ascensions\, early military and civilian aircraft development\, the quest to break the sound barrier\, and rocket launches all occurred on the lakes. \nJoin us to hear some of the stories of how the inland seas relate to outer space! \nEvent website: http://thunderbayfriends.org/index.php/event/inner-space-to-outer-space-great-lakes-contribution-to-space-exploration-research/\nContact: Stephanie Gandulla\, Research Coordinator\, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary\nEmail: Steph.Gandulla@noaa.gov\nPhone: 989-884-6200

SUMMARY:Using Coastal Wetland Monitoring Data to Determine the Effectiveness of Restoration Actions
DESCRIPTION:Interagency Ecological Restoration Quality Committee (IERQC) Monthly Webinar Series: Using Coastal Wetland Monitoring Data to Determine the Effectiveness of Restoration Actions \nA critical component of the restoration process involves setting goals and objectives that reflect a desired change in a measurable indicator. However\, many restoration projects fail to accomplish this for a variety of reasons\, such as the complexity of the task\, the lack of a planning framework\, insufficient background data\, and/or funding limitations. In the absence of SMART goals and objectives\, evaluating restoration success is difficult and when attempted\, often misrepresents the results. \nThis presentation will discuss how Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority uses data from two long-term coastal wetland monitoring programs to set goals and objectives and evaluate project success. Using Oshawa Second Marsh as an example\, we will discuss the design of the long-term monitoring programs\, how that informs developing meaningful goals and objectives\, and how we can use these to determine the success or failure of restoration actions. \nEvent website: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/2190695956988603650\nContact: Lou Blume\, USEPA Quality Manager\nEmail: blume.louis@epa.gov

SUMMARY:Potential Biological Control Agents Matched for Invasive Hydrilla Biotypes in the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Biological control agents introduced into the U.S. for control of invasive hydrilla have been partially effective and new agents are needed\, especially those adapted to cooler climates/environments. Since 2014\, extensive surveys of hydrilla have been conducted in Asia\, particularly China and the Republic of Korea\, where U.S. introductions were thought to have originated. Samples were genetically characterized to identify matches with invasive U.S. introductions; separate dioecious and monoecious introductions last century and the more recent detection in the Connecticut River. Sites have been identified where each of these distinct genotypes occur and include monoecious and dioecious biotypes. Surveys were conducted at these sites to identify and collect herbivores for evaluation as biological control agents. Matt Purcell\, Director of the USDA ARS Australian Biological Control Laboratory\, will provide an overview of those survey efforts and discuss insects being evaluated to determine potential effectiveness as biological control agents for U.S. invasive hydrilla. \nEvent website: http://hydrillacollaborative.com/\nContact: Katie Evans\nEmail: hydrillacollaborative@ene.com

SUMMARY:Rural Communities Rise to the Challenge of Dual Disasters
DESCRIPTION:Rural communities face unique challenges in preparing for flooding and addressing related infrastructure needs. Local governments with small staffs often do not have the capacity to apply for disaster preparedness funding and can be left out of valuable federal programs.
