SUMMARY:IERQC Webinar: Characterization of Seed Banks in Dredge Material
DESCRIPTION:Dredging operations are a crucial part in maintaining navigation channels.  Historically\, dredged material has been stored in confined disposal facilities (CDFs)\, particularly when the material is determined to be contaminated. Due to the limited space currently available within CDFs nationwide\, new methods for sediment placement and use are currently being investigated. \nThe Interagency Ecological Restoration Quality Committee hosts monthly Webinars in an effort to bring restoration practitioners from across the country together to present and discuss the innovations aimed at improving the quality of ecological restoration data. Presentations are approximately 45 minutes in length\, followed by open discussion. \nEvent website: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/1819855989434920462\nContact: Lou Blume\, USEPA Quality Manager\nEmail: blume.louis@epa.gov

SUMMARY:Webinar: Approaches for Advancing Great Lakes Water Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Great Lakes Commission (GLC) for a webinar on July 21\, 2022\, from 11:00am to 12:00pm EDT. During this webinar\, GLC staff will present its collaborative blueprint on approaches for advancing Great Lakes water infrastructure. \nThe blueprint was created by a regional working group\, comprised of Great Lakes stakeholders from various jurisdictions and disciplines. The working group articulates approaches for rebuilding the basin’s water infrastructure with an influx of federal funding through the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). \nThe group lays out the blueprint in layers by four Priority Areas: (1) public health and safety\, (2) community engagement and trust-building\, (3) equitable distribution of investments and benefits\, and (4) asset management and workforce development. \nThe GLC also plans to include success stories to showcase how organizations\, water service providers\, or policymakers have already implemented some of the proposed recommendations included in the blueprint. \nThe GLC is currently soliciting feedback through its Idea Portal\, where members of the public can read the blueprint\, provide suggestions for its improvement and offer potential success stories to highlight in the blueprint. The Idea Portal will remain active until August 22\, 2022. \nThe approaches for advancing Great Lakes water infrastructure blueprint has received generous support from the Joyce Foundation. \nEvent website: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMpduuvpjojH9KMIr-NRUnyd4Wmf_r128FZ\nContact: James Polidori\, Great Lakes Commission\nEmail: jpolidori@glc.org

SUMMARY:Freshwater Science: Using Bacteria to Remove Microcystin from Drinking Water
DESCRIPTION:Many Ohio communities draw their drinking water from Lake Erie\, so making sure that any harmful algal bloom toxins are removed before the water reaches consumers is essential to maintaining public health. \nWhile water treatment plants currently use activated carbon\, ozonation\, and other methods to treat for algal toxins\, Dr. Jason Huntley at The University of Toledo\, with funding from the Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative is developing new cost-effective\, efficient\, and safe methods to remove algal toxins from drinking water\, using bacteria that naturally break down microcystin toxin into non-toxic component parts. The team was issued a patent on this technology in May 2021. \nEvent website: https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar/2022/07/28/gz50j/freshwater-science\nContact: Christina Dierkes\, Outreach Specialist\, Ohio Sea Grant\nEmail: dierkes.10@osu.edu

SUMMARY:Freshwater Science: The Value of Lake Erie Beaches
DESCRIPTION:Beach visits play an important role in Ohio’s $15 billion tourism industry\, but water quality issues like harmful algal blooms and E. coli outbreaks can negatively affect beachgoers and discourage them from returning to a favorite spot. The economic impact of these water quality issues is not well understood yet\, but estimates of this reduced economic welfare from 2019 are as high as $5.8 million. Dr. Brent Sohngen at The Ohio State University is working on determining the value of Lake Erie beaches to the state’s overall economy\, and how that value is affected when water quality issues like harmful algal blooms occur. \nEvent website: https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar/2022/12/07/drx7u/freshwater-science\nContact: Christina Dierkes\, Outreach Specialist\, Ohio Sea Grant\nEmail: dierkes.10@osu.edu

SUMMARY:Freshwater Science: Lake Erie Algae in the Depth of Winter
DESCRIPTION:Although harmful algal blooms happen in the summer\, the algae themselves are year-round residents of the water bodies they inhabit – but very little is known about other times in the annual cycle of blooms. For Lake Erie\, ice cover and extreme weather conditions in winter and spring prevent regular monitoring and safe sampling. \nBy partnering with the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards\, Dr. Mike McKay at the University of Windsor can take advantage of those ships’ ice-breaking capabilities to sample offshore waters in winter and early spring\, before state and federal agencies start their monitoring efforts. \nEvent website: https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar/2022/08/30/n2xhf/freshwater-science\nContact: Christina Dierkes\nEmail: dierkes.10@osu.edu
