SUMMARY:Anaerobic Digester Workshop: The future of manure and food waste management
DESCRIPTION:Manure digesters are becoming an important part of Michigan’s diverse portfolio of renewable energy production. These systems are providing farmers with opportunities for additional revenue streams through harvesting bio-gas produced by the anaerobic digestion of their farm’s animal manure. However\, these systems are complex\, have multiple design options\, and frequently include the potential for additional treatment options. When designed and operated correctly\, anaerobic digesters produce bio-gas that is collected\, cleaned\, and sold as Renewable Natural Gas. As a bonus\, the treatment process can significantly reduce manure bacteria levels\, improve the availability of manure nutrients\, and reduce manure odors. \nWorkshop participants will learn the fundamentals of anaerobic digestion and tour a new anaerobic digester that is designed to treat manure from three large dairy farms and generate renewable energy from manure. \n1:00 p.m. Workshop Presentations at Polkton Township Hall\, 6900 Arthur Drive West\, Coopersville\, MI\, followed by farm tour. \nEvent website: https://www.miglswcs.org/events-and-archives/\nContact: Gerald Miller\, Vice President\, Michigan Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society\nEmail: gerald.miller@miswcs.org

SUMMARY:Great Lakes Seminar Series: Bottom Roughness of Freshwater Ice: Impacts on Remote Sensing Observations\, and Implications for Underwater Oil Releases
DESCRIPTION:The ice underside in freshwater lakes of various sizes has been observed to be appreciably rough as a function of flow oscillations and pressure ridging in large open lakes\, and variability in snow depth modifying the conductive heat flux (i.e. freezing rates) of the lake. In the case of an underwater oil pipeline rupture occurring in the winter\, consolidated ice cover serves to both retain buoyant oil and mask the location of the oil to clean-up crews. The storage capacity of freshwater ice is a function of the roughness of the ice-water interface\, the magnitude and correlation length of which varies dependent on the weather from year to year. This presentation focuses on preliminary investigations in the Straits of Mackinac which indicates that ice bottom variability in a region with considerable oscillatory flow is 0.3 m3 per m2\, similar to that of first year sea ice. \nEvent website: https://ciglr.seas.umich.edu/event/101223-grant-gunn/\nContact: Margaret Throckmorton\, Administrative Project Coordinator\, University of Michigan\nEmail: throckmj@umich.edu
