SUMMARY:Rural Communities Rise to the Challenge of Dual Disasters
DESCRIPTION:Rural communities face unique challenges in preparing for flooding and addressing related infrastructure needs. Local governments with small staffs often do not have the capacity to apply for disaster preparedness funding and can be left out of valuable federal programs. This briefing will characterize these issues in the context of COVID-19 and highlight solutions communities are implementing to meet them. \nDr. Richard Norton\, Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Michigan (UM)\, will discuss his work with Great Lakes coastal communities\, which are mostly small and rural communities\, and he will use the example of the recent Midland dam floods to highlight governance challenges in repairing critical infrastructure. \nSteve Samuelson\, CFM\, NFIP Coordinator for the State of Kansas Department of Agriculture\, will discuss issues small towns face in accessing federal mapping and flood protection programs\, and the programs that work to build flood resilience in rural areas. \nEvent website: https://www.eesi.org/briefings/view/061820rural\nContact: Amber Todoroff\nEmail: atodoroff@eesi.org

SUMMARY:Western Lake Erie Ecosystem Report Card
DESCRIPTION:The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) and partners will release the inaugural Western Lake Erie Report Card on Friday\, August 14\, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. This is the first effort that combines environmental data to show health status of both the lake and watershed in one integrated report. \nA virtual press conference will be held with U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI)\, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz\, Lucas County Commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak\, and professors from University of Maryland and University of Toledo. \nDr. Bill Dennison\, Vice President of Science Application\, UMCES\, is to present findings. About one-third of the total population of the Great Lakes Basin lives within the Lake Erie Watershed. The lake provides drinking water for 11 million residents and is home to one of the largest freshwater commercial and recreational fisheries in the world. The lake is endangered. Ecosystem health is driven by harmful algal blooms\, a significant problem which plagues Western Lake Erie. \nPlease contact Caitlin Bowman to RSVP: 301.807.1636 or cbowman@yesandagency.com \nEvent website: Virtual Video Conference – Via Google Meet\nMeeting Link: meet.google.com/qnq-xfqh-pre\nMeeting Phone: (US)+1 413-889-2310 PIN: 158 505 465# \nContact: Mike Smith\, GreenSmith PR Agency\nEmail: mike@greensmithpr.com\nPhone: 703-623-3834

SUMMARY:WaterTalk: Riverscapes and Lifeways - Biocultural Diversity and River Flow Management
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Water Institute’s WaterTalks lecture series\, Rebecca Tharme\, Fellow in Residence at the LE STUDIUM Loire Valley Institute for Advanced Studies\, presents\, “Riverscapes and Lifeways – Biocultural Diversity and River Flow Management.” \nFor millennia\, people have been part of nature in riverscapes\, coevolving with the living river systems that are the hearts of these environments. As well as being biologically diverse and resilient ecosystems\, the world’s rivers have been paths for the cultural identity\, adaptation\, material and spiritual wellbeing\, and security of human civilizations. River flows continue to connect people\, places\, and wildlife today\, inspiring and sustaining a myriad beliefs\, values\, and ways of life. Tharme will explore interlinkages between nature and culture for rivers\, particularly in the context of the global biocultural diversity crisis – in part a consequence of the fragmentation and flow alteration impacts associated with water infrastructure development. \nEvent website: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VvEqYHR7S8yS3mzc5rED1A\nContact: Allie Dusome\, Communications Officer\, University of Waterloo Water Institute\nEmail: adusome@uwaterloo.ca
