SUMMARY:Reflections on Great Lakes Water Quality Progress: HYBRID IJC Input Meeting
DESCRIPTION:What kind of progress towards more swimmable\, fishable and drinkable Great Lakes are you seeing\, or making\, happen? What should be done to improve Great Lakes water quality in your community? The International Joint Commission (IJC) is hosting a public meeting to consider your reflections on Great Lakes water quality progress. \nThis English-only meeting is in-person at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre (Ontario)\, with a livestream and real-time virtual engagement activities for those not able to attend in-person. \nAs part of its responsibilities under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement\, the International Joint Commission (IJC) seeks public input on the Canadian and US governments’ 2022 Progress Report of the Parties (PROP). Visit ijc.org for more information on all the ways you can provide the IJC with your input on Great Lakes Water Quality. \nEvent website: https://www.ijc.org/en/2022-Great-Lakes-Progress-Input\nContact: Allison Voglesong-Zejnati\nEmail: allison.voglesong-zejnati@ijc.org

SUMMARY:Freshwater Science: A Toxin Forecast for Lake Erie’s Harmful Algal Blooms
DESCRIPTION:Scientists are currently able to accurately forecast the size and approximate location of Lake Erie’s summer harmful algal blooms\, but they still have questions about what controls when blooms become toxic\, and how to predict which algal toxins the bloom is likely to produce. Dr. Justin Chaffin at Ohio State’s Stone Lab is studying the environmental factors that cause Lake Erie algal blooms to become toxic or remain non-toxic\, to provide more guidance to water utilities on when they should plan to treat drinking water for algal toxins. \nEvent website: https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar/2022/09/29/g4fua/freshwater-science\nContact: Christina Dierkes\, Outreach Specialist\nEmail: dierkes.10@osu.edu

SUMMARY:Freshwater Science: Why Environmentally Conscious Shoppers Don’t Bring Reusable Bags
DESCRIPTION:Single-use plastic bags are everywhere in society\, but despite their convenience\, they can have negative impacts on the environment and on waste management. Farmers markets seem like a logical place to encourage the use of reusable bags\, but when Jill Bartolotta and Dr. Scott Hardy at Ohio Sea Grant examined the effects of giving out free reusable bags at Ohio farmers markets\, they found that just having bags available is not an effective approach to reducing the use of plastic bags. Instead\, communities should consider focused approaches like bag bans and education and outreach strategies\, as well as financial and policy incentives. \nEvent website: https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar/2022/10/27/nz6ih/freshwater-science\nContact: Christina Dierkes\, Outreach Specialist\, Ohio Sea Grant\nEmail: dierkes.10@osu.edu

SUMMARY:IERQC Monthly Webinar Series: Dreissena in Lake Ontario 30 Years Post-Invasion
DESCRIPTION:Dreissena in Lake Ontario 30 years post-invasion\, presented by Alexander Karatayev\, PhD\, SUNY Buffalo State College. \nAbout the Presentation:  We examined three decades of changes in dreissenid populations in Lake Ontario and predation by round goby (Neogobius melanostomus). Dreissenids (almost exclusively quagga mussels\, Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) peaked in 2003\, 13 years after arrival\, and then declined at depths <90 m but continued to increase deeper through 2018. Lake-wide density also increased from 2008 to 2018 along with average mussel lengths and lake-wide biomass\, which reached an all-time high in 2018. Round goby densities should impact mussel populations based on feeding rates\, as indicated in the literature. Although the size distributions indicate that round goby is affecting mussel recruitment\, we did not find a decline in dreissenid density in the nearshore and mid-depth ranges where goby have been abundant since 2005. The lake-wide densities and biomass of quagga mussels have increased over time\, due to both the growth of individual mussels in the shallower depths\, and a continuing increase in density at >90 m. Thus\, the ecological effects of quagga mussels in Lake Ontario are likely to continue into the foreseeable future. \nEvent website: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/9156120827853294606\nContact: Lou Blume\, USEPA Quality Manager\nEmail: Blume.Louis@epa.gov

SUMMARY:Freshwater Science: Monitoring New Contaminants in Public Drinking Water Sources
DESCRIPTION:Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs)\, including antibiotics\, are emerging contaminants in water that are not completely eliminated during water treatment. Because these compounds can affect human and wildlife health\, it’s important to assess their presence in drinking and wastewater. \nDr. Jen Mou and Dr. Laura Leff at Kent State University are developing new methods to detect these compounds\, to help guide approaches for dealing with contaminants like them in the future. The team also wants to determine if the presence of a bacterial gene that codes for antibiotic resistance can predict levels of antibiotic contamination in water samples. \nThe webinar is free\, but registration is required to receive log-in information. \nEvent website: https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/news/calendar/2022/11/15/glnre/freshwater-science\nContact: Christina Dierkes\, Outreach Specialist\, Ohio Sea Grant\nEmail: dierkes.10@osu.edu
