The U.S. Coast Guard has deployed two autonomous orange Saildrone vessels on Lake Erie as part of a larger 16-drone program to monitor the U.S.–Canada maritime border, track vessel traffic, support search-and-rescue operations, and help detect smuggling activities. These wind- and solar-powered drones can remain at sea for up to 100 days, using cameras, radar, AIS tracking, and satellite communications to provide persistent surveillance across the vast Great Lakes region.
