The Great Lakes Commission’s data.glc.org is a new public resource for discovering Great Lakes datasets, maps, dashboards and other data tools. This web portal brings together data and tools created by the GLC and through GLC-supported partnerships and collaboratives.

Previously, these resources were distributed across individual applications, GLC web pages, and separate project and collaborative websites. This new searchable catalog makes them easier to find and use. data.glc.org is intended to help government agencies, researchers, Great Lakes practitioners, community organizations and members of the public locate information that can support planning, research and regional decision-making.

Visitors can explore interactive maps and dashboards, preview mapped data and, where available, download datasets in multiple formats or access them as web services for use in their own analyses and applications. The catalog includes data and tools produced by the GLC as well as selected authoritative resources from partner agencies and organizations.

Clear descriptions provide context about each resource, including what it contains, where the information came from and how it can be used. The site also advances consistent standards for documenting, licensing and citing GLC data products.

Resources are organized according to the five goals of the GLC Strategic Plan. A separate collection of commonly used Great Lakes reference layers provides foundational geographic data for mapping and analysis in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River region.

The GLC has conducted mapping and geospatial analysis in the Great Lakes region for more than 30 years, and data.glc.org provides a modern, public home for a curated collection of that work. The initial catalog prioritizes the GLC’s most current and relevant resources. It will continue to grow as additional datasets and tools are reviewed, documented and prepared for public use.

By making Great Lakes information easier to discover, understand and reuse, data.glc.org helps extend the value of work completed across GLC programs and with regional partners.
