Western Lake Erie Ecosystem Report Card

August 14, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) and partners will release the inaugural Western Lake Erie Report Card on Friday, August 14, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. This is the first effort that combines environmental data to show health status of both the lake and watershed in one integrated report.

A virtual press conference will be held with U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI), Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, Lucas County Commissioner Tina Skeldon Wozniak, and professors from University of Maryland and University of Toledo.

Dr. Bill Dennison, Vice President of Science Application, UMCES, is to present findings. About one-third of the total population of the Great Lakes Basin lives within the Lake Erie Watershed. The lake provides drinking water for 11 million residents and is home to one of the largest freshwater commercial and recreational fisheries in the world. The lake is endangered. Ecosystem health is driven by harmful algal blooms, a significant problem which plagues Western Lake Erie.
