Rouge Winter Stonefly Search
January 20, 2024
Event Navigation
Volunteers are needed to help search for winter stoneflies (sensitive insects that hatch from streams in winter) as part of a long term monitoring program. No experience is necessary, just an interest in learning and willingness to be outdoors for several hours in the winter. Children 8 and older are welcome with a participating adult. Volunteers meet at a central location for an intro and refreshments, are assigned to a team of 4-8 people and travel to two sites to sample under the direction of a trained team leader. Only the team leader enters the water; volunteer pick through samples onshore. This is a fun and exciting way to get to know the Rouge River.
