Twenty-five years ago, several lower Detroit River islands and marshes were threatened by development. As part of a strategy to save these ecosystems, local conservationists coined the term “Conservation Crescent” to raise awareness of the value and benefits of this crescent-shaped archipelago of islands and wetlands.
