Construction on the Great Lakes Line 5 Tunnel Project, a proposed $800 million tunnel that aims to safeguard a pipeline carrying crude oil and natural gas liquids through the Straits of Mackinac, could begin this fall. A tunnel boring machine would be used to create a concrete wall about a foot and a half thick with rebar, more than 350 feet below the channel bottom.
