Although the Society of Canadian Limnologists and the Canadian Conference for Fisheries Research have had joint-annual conferences since 1979, the meeting in 2023 marks our first official conference as the new Society of Canadian Aquatic Sciences (SCAS).

The Great Lakes: Managing Fisheries and Exploring Islands

The 33rd Annual Great Lakes conference will be held virtually on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, beginning at 9:30am. The free conference will feature two themes with three presentations per theme as well as a panel discussion with Q/A from participants. The themes are Fisheries Management in the Great Lakes and Great Lakes Islands.

Freshwater Science: Understanding and (Potentially) Mitigating the Impacts of Tile Drainage

Recent research from across the Midwest shows that with drainage water management, which uses tile drainage to control and adjust water flow from fields, annual nitrogen loads in field runoff can be reduced by as much as 50% while increasing crop yields. A similar result might be possible for phosphorus, with can fuel harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie.

European Frog-bit Collaborative Delimitation Training

As part of the European Frog-bit Collaborative’s effort to delimit high-risk European frog-bit (EFB) infestations within the Great Lakes region, the Collaborative is hosting a one-hour virtual training session to introduce natural resource managers to a standardized EFB monitoring tool that utilizes an ArcGIS Field Maps platform.
