Habitat Restoration Database: Ford Cove
NOAA-GLC Regional Habitat Restoration PartnershipFord Cove Habitat Restoration Database
The Ford Cove Shoreline Restoration Feasibility Study was conducted to collect ecological, geological, and chemical data to inform a restoration concept design. Data were collected during spring and summer of 2021.
The following metrics were collected:
Chemical Evaluation: Water samples were taken to assess the water quality within Ford Cove and on the exterior of Bird Island.
Geotech Evaluation: Samples were collected and tested for metrics such as pH, organic matter, macronutrients, soluble salts.
Ecological Evaluation: A threatened and endangered species survey as well as vegetation, fish, bird, herpetofauna, aquatic macroinvertebrate, and mussel sampling took place to assess the general species abundance, richness, and diversity at the project site.

Funding
Just under $6 million was been awarded to this project by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). The GLRI is a federal program designed to protect and restore the largest system of fresh surface water in the world — the Great Lakes. The project funding was provided via the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through a Regional Partnership with the Great Lakes Commission.
